Spring low water conditions

The spring salmon season has arrived and some anglers have had a good start to their season with some lovely fish being caught. In the last few weeks water levels have been falling and heavy tube patterns are just bouncing along the bottom of streams, its time to move to lighter tube flies or even a dressed fly.

Conehead patterns with plastic tube bodies are still a very good option giving you a bit of weight and they sit nicely in the water. Plenty of movement compared to a copper tube in low water conditions. Here are three of my favorites –

Also Aluminium tubes have a place on the end of your leader at this time of year, again fantastic movement anywhere in the water table depending on which tip you are fishing. The real hot patterns are –

A few anglers have moved on to dressed flies be it singles or doubles due to the water conditions. There are many great patterns out there and here are a few of my early season choices –
